Dear Birding Enthusiasts
The omnivore bird with stilt-like legs, pink coloured feathers usually with a S shaped neck fly to the second largest brackish water ecosystem of India, the Pulicat lake in the month of November.
They are social birds that live in flocks to escape predators, breed and to increase the appetite. Flamingos feed on prawns, snails, shrimps, algae that are found in abundance in Pulicat lake. Also they live only in a particular water level, say half a feet. The frequent rains along the coromandel coast worried us about the presence of the flock and that is when this exciting glimpse of the birds was captured.
This is the ideal time for the birding enthusiasts to get enough sight of the Flamingos.
Flamingos in Chennai can be seen near Sholinganallur or at Pallikaranai Marshland. But one can large number of Flamingos near ISRO on the Pulicat lake. You can take a train from Chennai to Sullurpet and head to Pulicat Lake towards Sriharikota (i.e. Indian Space Research Organization, ISRO) by an auto or you can take a road trip to Pulicat Lake, the view from the road is worthwhile. It is advisable to carry a binocular for the ease of locating the birds. Carry your water bottle, food for an uninterrupted birding experience. Let us also remind ourselves to maintain environmental hygiene.
